Lewis Hamilton earned his fourth victory of the 2019 Formula 1 season in the season’s crown jewel race, the Monaco Grand Prix, at Circuit de Monaco.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton earned his second consecutive victory for the second time through the first six races of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season, as he won the season’s crown jewel race, the Monaco Grand Prix, at Circuit de Monaco to secure his fourth victory of the season.

Hamilton, who started the 78-lap race around the 19-turn, 2.074-mile (3.338-kilometer) Circuit de Monaco temporary street circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco from the pole position, won it by 0.537 seconds over Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen in second place.

However, Verstappen was issued a five-second time penalty earlier in the race for an unsafe release in the pits, so he ended up being demoted to fourth place.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas ended up being promoted to second and third place, respectively, as a result of Verstappen’s penalty. Hamilton’s official margin of victory over Vettel, whose second place finish is his season-high finish, was 2.602 seconds. Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly finished behind his teammate in a season-high fifth.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., Scuderia Toro Rosso teammates Daniil Kvyat and Alexander Albon, a rookie, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Rich Energy Haas’ Romain Grosjean rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Hamilton led all 78 of the race’s laps despite the fact that he was worried about his team’s medium tire selection for his final stint. Of the 20 drivers who started the race, only Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc failed to finish it, as his car was damaged after he cut his right rear tire attempting to pass Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg for 11th place early in the race.

A disastrous qualifying session relegated the hometown favorite to the 16th starting position, and his sense of urgency to get to the front ultimately created an early end to his race.

Of the 19 drivers who finished the race, 11 finished on the lead lap, seven finished one lap off the lead lap and one finished two laps off the lead lap.
