IndyCar: Colton Herta tops second 2019 Texas practice session

Colton Herta topped the speed chart in the second and final practice session for the DXC Technology 600, the ninth race on the 2019 IndyCar schedule, at Texas Motor Speedway.

Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta topped the speed chart in the second and final practice session for tomorrow night’s IndyCar race, the DXC Technology 600, at Texas Motor Speedway.

Herta topped the speed chart for the ninth race of the 17-race 2019 season, the 248-lap race around the four-turn, 1.44-mile (2.317-kilometer) high-banked Texas Motor Speedway oval in Fort Worth, Texas, by recording a top lap time of 23.3040 seconds (222.451 miles per hour) in his #88 Honda.

Herta led a top three Honda sweep of this practice session, as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato and Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi finished in second and third place in their #30 Honda and #27 Honda, respectively. His top lap speed was nearly 1.5 miles per hour quicker than that of Sato, which was 220.974 miles per hour (23.4598 seconds).

Team Penske’s Will Power was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the practice session and the only Chevrolet driver who finished in the top eight. He finished in fourth place in his #12 Chevrolet.

Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top eight on the speed chart in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place in their #7 Honda, #9 Honda, #15 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively, to give Honda drivers seven of the top eight positions.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden finished in ninth place in his #2 Chevrolet ahead of Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais in 10th in his #18 Honda.

Team Penske drivers were the top three Chevrolet drivers in this practice session, as Simon Pagenaud finished in 13th place in his #22 Chevrolet behind Honda drivers Santino Ferrucci, a rookie, of Dale Coyne Racing and Zach Veach of Andretti Autosport in 11th and 12th in their #19 Honda and #26 Honda, respectively.

The highest finishing non-Team Penske driver of this practice session was Carlin’s Charlie Kimball, who finished in 14th place in his #23 Chevrolet.

Qualifying for the 2019 DXC Technology 600 is scheduled to take place later this evening starting at 6:45 p.m. ET, and it set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network and NBC Sports Gold from 6:30 p.m. ET to 8:00 p.m. ET. The race itself, which is the ninth race of the 2019 IndyCar season, is scheduled to begin tomorrow evening at 8:40 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
