Following post-qualifying grid penalties, here is the provisional starting grid for the 2019 Formula 1 season’s seventh race, the Canadian Grand Prix, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Following the qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which is the seven of 21 races on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule, two drivers were penalized and had their initial starting positions stripped from them as a result.

While there were only two starting grid penalties, they ended up affecting the starting positions of 12 of the 20 drivers who are set to compete in this race.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen were issued these penalties after originally qualifying on the fifth row in ninth and 10th place, respectively, for this race.

Sainz Jr. was issued a three-position grid penalty for impeding the progress of Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon through turns one and two during the first round of qualifying for this race. Albon still ended up advancing to the second round and qualifying in 14th place.

Magnussen is set to start the race from the pit lane after crashing to end the second round of qualifying. He was in 10th place on the speed chart at the time, so he still technically advanced to the third and final round of qualifying, but his crash essentially reduced this round to a nine-driver round from the usual 10-driver round. He was issued his penalty as a result of the fact that the chassis of his car had to be changed following his hefty shunt.

Sainz Jr.’s three-position grid penalty coupled with Magnussen’s pit lane start penalty effectively resulted in Sainz Jr.’s grid penalty being a two-position grid penalty, as he is set to start the race in 11th place.

The only two drivers who moved up on the starting grid as a result of Sainz Jr.’s grid penalty were Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, who originally qualified for the race in 11th and 12th place but are set to start in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Verstappen and Kvyat are both set to move up two positions in the starting lineup as opposed to one as a result of the fact that Magnussen also originally qualified ahead of them. Everyone who qualified from 13th through 20th place is set to start in the same order but from 12th through 19th because of Magnussen’s penalty.

As a result, here is the provisional starting grid for the 2019 edition of the 70-lap Canadian Grand Prix around the 14-turn, 2.71-mile (4.361-kilometer) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course on Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

NOTE: Drivers listed in italics had their starting positions changed as a result of one or both of these two grid penalties.
