Formula 1: Will Lewis Hamilton win his third consecutive Singapore Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Marina Bay Street Circuit. Will he make it three in a row this weekend?
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton has won both of the last two Formula 1 races at Marina Bay Street Circuit, meaning that he is set to go for his third consecutive victory at the track in this Sunday’s race, the Singapore Grand Prix.
The last race at the 23-turn, 3.146-mile (5.063-kilometer) Marina Bay Street Circuit street course in Marina Bay, Singapore that was won by a driver other than Hamilton was held in September of 2016. This race was won by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg. Hamilton, meanwhile, finished in third place.
In the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton did not appear to be a contender for the victory after qualifying in fifth place. But he shot to the lead in the first few turns of the first laps of the race after a multi-car wreck and a subsequent spin took out three of the four drivers who started ahead of him and he passed the other one who survived the carnage.

This was the race’s lone lead change, as Hamilton went on to lead all 58 of its laps en route to a 4.507-second victory over Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo, the lone driver who started ahead of him but was not forced to retire from the race on the first lap.
In the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton took the pole position and only failed to lead 12 laps as a result of the fact that he came into the pits before other drivers did. He led 49 of the race’s 61 laps and won the race by 8.961 seconds over Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen in second place. The race, which featured four lead changes, resulted in each of the six drivers who qualified in the top six finishing in the positions where they qualified.

While Hamilton has earned two consecutive victories at Marina Bay Street Circuit, he has only truly been the dominant driver in one of the races in which he has done so, the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix.
The fact that Hamilton escaped the carnage on the first lap of the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix is a huge reason why he was able to win that race, and the fact that most of the drivers who were involved in this carnage were the drivers who were expected to compete for the race victory is another.
It is hard to bet against Hamilton regardless of the circumstances, but there are several other drivers who have a great chance to win this weekend’s race at the track. That said, with Hamilton currently on his first two-race win drought since last October, it’s hard to see that win drought extending to three races.

This race, which is the 15th race of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 22, and it is set to be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 8:05 a.m. ET.
