Erik Jones’s chance of advancing through the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs took a huge hit, as he was disqualified from the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones completed what was the team’s first ever 1-2-3-4 finish in a NASCAR Cup Series race by finishing in fourth place in the second of 10 races in the four-round 2019 playoffs, the Federated Auto Parts 400, at Richmond Raceway.

But Jones’s #20 Toyota failed post-race inspection following the conclusion of this 400-lap race around the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) Richmond Raceway oval in Richmond, Virginia, as it failed its pass through the Optical Scanning Station. The issue that caused this failure dealt with the car’s rear wheel alignment.

As a result, he has been disqualified from this race, and his #20 Toyota is set to go back to the NASCAR Research & Development Center.

Jones originally scored 42 points in this race, including the 33 he scored for finishing in fourth place and the nine he scored for his results in the race’s first two stages.

He was stripped of 41 of these 42 points and officially scored in 38th (last) place.

He ended this race just three points below the round of 12 cut line with just one race remaining in the round of 16 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval.

Based on the points that he lost and that several others gained as a result of his disqualification, he sits 45 points below it, meaning he is basically in a must-win situation heading into the 109-lap race around the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway roval in Concord, North Carolina next Sunday.

As a result of Jones’s disqualification, everybody who originally finished Saturday night’s race from fifth through 38th place was promoted by one position to between fourth and 37th, respectively.
