Two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden completed his exhibition run at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval during the NASCAR race weekend at the track.

Following the qualifying session for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval, two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden of Team Penske took to the part oval/part road course.

Newgarden completed an exhibition run around the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway roval in Concord, North Carolina for Shell-Pennzoil, his primary sponsor for this year’s Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and a longtime sponsor of Team Penske, one of two teams that compete in both IndyCar and NASCAR.

The 28-year-old Hendersonville, Tennessee native, who secured his second IndyCar championship in the last three seasons this past Sunday in the 2019 season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, spent roughly 15 minutes completing laps around the track in his #2 Shell-Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet IndyCar.

Here is what Newgarden had to say about his run, according to Motorsport.

"“I think there was maybe another couple seconds in it but I didn’t want to make a mistake in front of everybody showing off. I wasn’t taking it easy, I can tell you that. What would have been interesting is during a normal race weekend we would have had all 24 cars go out and we would start putting down our rubber on the track. It was interesting to see the track getting better for me. It would have been the same for the NASCAR guys if they went out after me, they would have seen the track get better as well. It’s just a process you go through.”"

Also according to Motorsport, Newgarden’s top lap time was roughly 13 seconds faster than the pole position speed for Sunday afternoon’s Cup Series race.

Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron took the pole position for this race by recording a top lap time of 80.932 seconds (103.198 miles per hour) in his #24 Chevrolet Camaro on Friday afternoon. This would make Newgarden’s top lap time around 67.932 seconds (122.946 miles per hour).

Prior to Newgarden’s run, Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern stated that IndyCar had already been in talks with Speedway Motorsports, the owners of Charlotte Motor Speedway, about having an IndyCar race contested at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval, and he also stated that IndyCar had requested Newgarden to provide feedback about the track after his run.

Will Josef Newgarden’s exhibition run at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval ahead of the NASCAR race weekend at the track lead to an IndyCar race being contested there in the future?

This weekend’s NASCAR races at the track are tomorrow afternoon’s Xfinity Series race, the Drive for the Cure 250, and Sunday afternoon’s Cup Series race, the Bank of America Roval 400. Both races are playoff races. The former is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET while the latter is set to be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET.
