Formula 1: What we know about the 2020 driver lineup

There are five seats still up for grabs on the 20-car 2020 Formula 1 grid. But what do we already know about the rest of the driver lineup?

The 2019 Formula 1 season is quickly approaching its end, as 16 of the 21 races on the schedule have been completed. Only the Japanese, Mexican, United States, Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix remain.

Silly Season for the 2020 season has been in full swing for a few months now, and there have been several big announcements throughout these months.

There are still five open seats remaining on the 20-car grid for next year, but 15 drivers have already been confirmed across nine of the sport’s 10 teams.

So what do we know already know about the 2020 Formula 1 driver lineup?

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are both set to return to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport while Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc are both set to return to Scuderia Ferrari.

Max Verstappen is set to return to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, although the team have not yet confirmed who their second driver will be. Alexander Albon currently drives for the team after replacing Pierre Gasly after the first 12 races of the 2019 season.

Both Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lando Norris are set to return to McLaren next year, and Renault have confirmed their driver lineup as well. Daniel Ricciardo is set to return to the team while Esteban Ocon, who does not currently compete in Formula 1, is set to replace Nico Hulkenberg.

SportPesa Racing Point have confirmed that both Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll are set to return to the team in 2020. Alfa Romeo Racing have confirmed half of their driver lineup, as Kimi Raikkonen is set to return to the team. Antonio Giovinazzi is currently Raikkonen’s teammate.

Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean are both set to return to Haas next season, and George Russell is set to return to ROKiT Williams Racing. Russell’s teammate, Robert Kubica, has confirmed that he will not return to Williams next year.

Scuderia Toro Rosso are the only team that have not confirmed any of their drivers for next year. Gasly currently drives for the team after replacing Albon, and he is the teammate to Daniil Kvyat.

With 15 of the 20 seats on the 2020 Formula 1 grid having been confirmed, which five drivers will land the open seats? There are still two open seats at Toro Rosso and one seat open at each of Red Bull Racing, Alfa Romeo Racing and Williams.
