Confirming previous speculation, Scuderia Alpha Tauri have confirmed that Pierre Gasly is set to return to the team in the 2020 Formula 1 season.

They may be changing their name, but Scuderia Toro Rosso, effectively the Red Bull Racing junior team, will not be changing their driver lineup ahead of the 2020 Formula 1 season.

Toro Rosso, set to be renamed Scuderia Alpha Tauri ahead of the 2020 season, have confirmed that Pierre Gasly is set to return to the team next year, confirming previous speculation.

This move was practically confirmed when Red Bull Racing confirmed that Alexander Albon is set to return to the team next year.

Red Bull Racing team manager Helmut Marko had recently stated that the three drivers currently in the three open seats within the organization would remain in them next year and that the team had the right to decide who ended up where.

With Albon set to remain alongside Max Verstappen at the Milton Keynes-based team, the 23-year-old Frenchman is set to remain at the Faenza-based team.

Here is what Gasly had to say about this opportunity, according to the team.

"“I’m really happy to continue with the team for 2020 and I’m sure we have exciting challenges ahead of us. Toro Rosso has always given me the best chances to perform every season and I’m super motivated and dedicated to repaying them with the best results possible next year. Toro Rosso has been improving year after year and it’s great to be a part of the journey. I’m very excited to see what we can achieve together in 2020.”"

Daniil Kvyat, who also currently drives for the team, was also confirmed by the team for the 2020 season. Here is what team principal Franz Tost had to say about the team’s driver lineup for next year.

"“I’m delighted to retain Pierre and Daniil for next season. Both drivers have shown really good performances this season and they have proven in their years in F1 to be very competitive, able to exploit the car’s potential and give valuable feedback to make improvements. This young but experienced duo, combined with hopefully a competitive car, will be the best factors to achieve a very successful season in 2020 and I’m looking forward to this extended cooperation.”"

Gasly made his Formula 1 debut in the 2017 season as the replacement for Kvyat at Toro Rosso. He drove in five of the season’s final six races before he was confirmed at the team for the entire 2018 season.

Gasly was then promoted to Red Bull Racing as the replacement for the Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo ahead of the 2019 season, but after 12 races of struggling alongside Verstappen, he was demoted back to Toro Rosso, resulting in Albon’s promotion.

In 45 career Formula 1 races, Gasly has recorded 18 top 10 finishes, including nine in his 33 starts at Toro Rosso and nine in his 12 starts at Red Bull Racing. He recorded career-high finishes of fourth place for both teams. He finished in fourth in the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix driving for Toro Rosso, and he finished in fourth in the 2019 British Grand Prix driving for Red Bull Racing.

He has recorded four top nine finishes since making his return to Toro Rosso seven races ago following the summer break.
