Follow along with our live qualifying updates for both races of this weekend’s IndyCar doubleheader, the Iowa IndyCar 250s, at Iowa Speedway.

One qualifying session, two starting lineups: that is IndyCar‘s unique approach to this weekend’s doubleheader at Iowa Speedway, the Iowa IndyCar 250s.

Iowa Speedway was originally scheduled to host one 300-lap race this season on Saturday, July 18, but because of the many cancellations caused by the coronavirus pandemic, IndyCar gave the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) oval in Newton, Iowa two 250-lap races, one this evening and another one tomorrow evening as originally scheduled.

Qualifying for oval races traditionally features two-lap, single-car runs, with the average speeds determining the starting lineup.

But that is not the case for this weekend.

There is just one qualifying session, a traditional two-lap, single-car qualifying session, that is set to cover both races. Each driver’s first lap is set to determine the starting lineup for the first race while each driver’s second lap is set to determine the starting lineup for the second race.

Team Penske have taken three pole positions so far this season, with Josef Newgarden having taken two and Will Power having taken one. Arrow McLaren SP have taken the other one, with Pato O’Ward having secured the first of his career. One oval race has been contested so far this season at Texas Motor Speedway, and Newgarden took the pole position for that race.

Newgarden is the two-time and reigning race winner at Iowa Speedway. Team Penske have taken five consecutive pole positions at the bullring-type track going back to 2015.

Who will take the pole positions for these 250-lap races, and who will qualify where throughout the rest of the field for both of them? Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the 2020 Iowa IndyCar 250s to find out.
