There are eight races remaining on the updated 2020 IndyCar schedule. But three of them could end up being replaced via yet another overhaul.

The 2020 IndyCar schedule has been fluid for the last several months due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there was always the belief that the current 14-race schedule, which was compiled following several overhauls during the extended offseason, may not be the final schedule.

Even six races — nearly halfway — into the season, we could still see another massive overhaul.

According to RACER, the three races that are scheduled to take place from Sunday, September 13 through Sunday, September 20 on the West Coast may not happen.

The first of these three races is scheduled to take place at Portland International Raceway on Sunday, September 13, and the other two are scheduled to take place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as part of a doubleheader weekend on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.

However, safety concerns pertaining to the pandemic may prevent those races from taking place. The fact that outdoor gatherings are limited to 250 people in Oregon and the fact that California has become a hot spot for COVID-19 are among the most notable reasons for the anticipated axing of these three events.

That would drop the scheduled down to 11 races, but there are reportedly plans in place to create three additional doubleheaders using races that are already on the calendar.

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is scheduled to host the next race on the schedule on Sunday, August 9 while World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway is scheduled to host a race on Sunday, August 30. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course is scheduled to host its second race of the year on Saturday, October 3.

All three of those venues could host doubleheaders on their already scheduled weekends to make up for the missed races at Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and bring the schedule back to 14 events.

Such changes would give the schedule a total of 14 races at just eight tracks across seven different venue, and the whole month of September would feature zero races. The original schedule, which was released last September, contained 17 races at 16 tracks across 15 different venues and is a far cry from what we have now.

Should these changes be confirmed, Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be the host of four of the 14 races, with the road course hosting three of those four. The road course already hosted a race in early July, and the oval is scheduled to host the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, August 23. Doubleheaders have already taken place at Road America and Iowa Speedway in July.
