Kevin Magnussen will not return to Haas for what would have been a fifth consecutive season in the 2021 Formula 1 season.

In a move that many saw as inevitable, Haas have confirmed that Magnussen will not be back with the team in the 2021 Formula 1 season.

Magnussen has driven for the sport’s lone American team since their second season in 2017. He has driven alongside Romain Grosjean in each of his four seasons with the team, and the team have also confirmed that Grosjean won’t be back next year.

No active teammates have been together longer than Magnussen and Grosjean. The only other two drivers who began competing together in 2017 are Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes, which is the only other active pairing that existed before 2019.

Here is what Magnussen had to say about his departure.

"“The 2020 season will be my last with Haas F1 Team. I have had a great time with the team for four years and I look back at a great journey. Being part of a brand new team has been a challenge that I have thoroughly enjoyed and it has brought me a huge amount of experience that has helped me grow and develop as a racing driver.“I would like to thank Gene, Guenther and all of the race team for their loyalty and trust in me over the past four years. I am still working on my plans for the future, which I will announce in due course. There are still six races to do this season, and I am determined to give my all to finish off on a high.”"

Magnussen has competed in 113 races throughout his Formula 1 career, including 73 for Haas. His career-high finish of second place came in his series debut back in the 2014 Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit when he was driving for McLaren.

His best finishes as a Haas driver are his fifth place finishes in the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit and in the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, a race which saw the team’s best ever result with Magnussen in fifth and Grosjean in fourth.

The 28-year-old Dane finished in a career-high ninth place in the 2018 driver standings when Haas finished in a career-high fifth in the constructor standings.

Through the first 11 races of the 2020 season, which has been Haas’s worst season to date, Magnussen sits in 19th place in the driver standings with just one point thanks to his 10th place finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring back in July.
