Former full-time IndyCar driver Marco Andretti is set to compete in the inaugural season of the Superstar Racing Experience stock car series.

Marco Andretti announced in mid-January that he would be stepping away from full-time IndyCar competition before the start of the 2021 season and focusing on only the Indianapolis 500 and perhaps a few other races on the 17-race schedule.

The 33-year-old Nazareth, Pennsylvania native noted that he would be pursuing other racing opportunities as well, and now he has landed another opportunity.

Andretti is set to compete in the inaugural season of the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Racing) this year. SRX Racing is a stock car racing series founded by Sandy Montag, George Pyne, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham, Jeff Gordon’s three-time champion crew chief.

Andretti is the 10th confirmed driver for this new series.

Stewart was the first, and eight others have been confirmed since then, including IndyCar’s Tony Kanaan, Paul Tracy and Helio Castroneves, NASCAR’s Bobby Labonte and Bill Elliott, Formula 1’s Mark Webber and Trans-Am’s Willy T. Ribbs and Ernie Francis Jr.

Races will primarily be held on 0.5-mile dirt asphalt short tracks and are scheduled to last for 90 minutes without pit stops. There is, however, a planned “halftime” period for adjustments to be made to the cars.

The six-race 2021 season is scheduled to get underway at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut on Saturday, June 12. Races are scheduled to take place every Saturday evening until July 17.

Andretti enters this series with 248 races of IndyCar experience over 15 years. He won two races, one in 2006 at Sonoma Raceway and another in 2011 at Iowa Speedway. He has 20 career podium finishes, including four in 15 Indy 500 starts. He dramatically finished in second place in the 2006 Indy 500 as a 19-year-old rookie.
