Denny Hamlin will drop to the rear of the field for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway after having been slated to start from the pole position.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin was initially slated to start Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway from the pole position after the starting lineup was set via the formula which was introduced last August.

However, that will not be the case.

Hamlin’s #11 Toyota will drop to the rear ahead of this 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Homestead, Florida after unapproved adjustments were made.

He will still be credited with the pole position, giving him five in a row at the track.

Three other drivers are also set to drop to the rear of the field, with those three being Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman, Spire Motorsports’ Corey LaJoie and Rick Ware Racing’s James Davison. All of those drivers were slated to start on the inside lane.

Because of Hamlin’s penalty, everyone slated to start on the inside lane is set to move up by one row. That includes teammate Christopher Bell, who is set to move up to the front row behind the wheel of his #20 Toyota after initially being slated to start in third place.

But Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who was initially slated to start in second behind the wheel of his #22 Ford, is set to be the new polesitter. The #22 Ford is set to be the control car, but because of the situation, he will not get lane choice like Hamlin would have.
