Lewis Hamilton has a chance to break an all-time Formula 1 record in tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix. But he already tied another today.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton entered the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring with a chance to break an all-time Formula 1 record for most wins in a single race.

Hamilton is an eight-time winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, having won it in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

This is tied with his own British Grand Prix record at Silverstone Circuit and fellow seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher’s French Grand Prix record at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours.

But even before the 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.722-mile (4.381-kilometer) road course in Mogyoród, Hungary, Hamilton has tied another record.

Hamilton took the pole position for this race in Saturday’s three-round, knockout qualifying session, giving him eight at the Hungaroring throughout his career. This ties the all-time record for most pole positions at a single venue.

This is, of course, a record that he had already held by way of his performance at another track. He has eight career pole positions for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit. The other two drivers with eight pole positions at a single venue are Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. Schumacher took eight pole positions for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit, and Senna took eight pole positions for the Grand Prix of San Marino at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari (Imola).

After qualifying, WynnBET now lists Hamilton as the favorite at -200 to win the Hungarian Grand Prix for what would be a record ninth time.

He had been listed as a +150 underdog to secure his fourth straight Hungarian Grand Prix win heading into the race weekend, trailing only Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver leads Hamilton by eight points in the driver standings. Verstappen is now listed as a +225 underdog.
