Keep tabs on Sunday afternoon’s qualifying session for next Sunday afternoon’s running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Following Saturday’s qualifying session for the 106th running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 12 of the 33 drivers on the entry list advanced to the first of two qualifying sessions on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the fact that Saturday’s session was halted twice and ended early as a result of rain and lightning at the track, the drivers all had the opportunity to complete a four-lap qualifying attempt (full results here) around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval in Speedway, Indiana. A number of drivers also went out for a second attempt.

DragonSpeed/Cusick Motorsports’ Stefan Wilson was the only driver who did not make a qualifying run, but that was as a result of a mechanical issue. Because there are not more than 33 drivers on the entry list, Wilson is set to start the race in 33rd place behind the wheel of his #25 Chevrolet anyway.

The fastest 12 drivers from Saturday’s qualifying session advanced to Sunday’s Top 12 Qualifying session, where they are each set to make another four-lap qualifying attempt in reverse order of yesterday’s speeds.

The fastest six drivers from this session are set to advance to the Firestone Fast Six, where they are each set to make another four-lap qualifying attempt to battle for the pole position.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay was the fastest qualifier on Saturday, posting a four-lap average speed of 233.655 miles per hour behind the wheel of his #21 Chevrolet.

VeeKay’s first lap at 234.702 miles per hour was the quickest lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1996, and his full four-lap run was the third fastest Indy 500 qualifying attempt of all-time.
