NASCAR driver to undergo surgery after Martinsville
By Asher Fair
Chase Briscoe is indeed set to undergo surgery on his broken finger following Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.
As a result of a dirt race accident two Thursdays ago, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe broke the middle finger of his left hand. While this injury did not stop him from competing in both the Truck Series and Cup Series races at Bristol Motor Speedway over the weekend, it was revealed that he would be undergoing surgery afterward.
But during Sunday’s race, Stewart-Haas Racing team co-owner Tony Stewart, the guest analyst in the Fox broadcast booth with Mike Joy and Clint Bowyer, stated that the driver of the No. 14 Ford might not actually need surgery.
Briscoe said the same thing after the race, confirming that a Monday x-ray would determine his next step. However, the 28-year-old Mitchell, Indiana native has since confirmed that he is indeed set to undergo surgery.
Chase Briscoe is set to have rods and screws put in after this coming Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.
The procedure is scheduled for Monday.
Briscoe is not expected to miss any time as a result of this surgery. He is set to become the second full-time Cup Series driver named Chase to undergo surgery in 2023, with Chase Elliott having had an operation on his broken left tibia last month. Elliott is set to return to action in this Sunday afternoon’s NOCO 400 after missing the last six races.
Briscoe’s injury did not seem to hinder him this past weekend. In his first Truck Series start since 2021, he finished in seventh place behind the wheel of his No. 22 AM Racing Ford.
In the Cup Series race, he finished in a season-high fifth place to move into the top 20 in the point standings following a rough start to the year.
