Not that it ever truly looked unlikely, the possibility of Alexander Rossi returning to Andretti Autosport for the 2020 IndyCar season is looking more likely.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi is the biggest domino of the 2020 IndyCar Silly Season, as his current contract with the team expires at the end of the 2019 season and he is justifiably considered the hottest free agent on the market.

The 27-year-old Nevada City, California native had been rumored to re-sign with the four-car Honda-powered team, but there had been other rumors that he could sign elsewhere.

Many rumors suggested that he would join Team Penske as their fourth driver alongside Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud and Will Power. He had previously been rumored to join Team Penske ahead of the 2017 season to replace Juan Pablo Montoya, but Newgarden ended up doing so.

Other rumors suggested that he would join one of the sport’s other Honda teams if Andretti Autosport switched engine manufacturers from Honda to Chevrolet.

But according to Andretti Autosport team owner Michael Andretti, things are looking good regarding Rossi returning to the cockpit of the #27 Honda beyond the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Here is what Andretti had to say about the matter, according to NBC Sports.

"“I feel good about it. The whole thing is we all want to be here together. Whenever everybody wants to work toward the same goal, that makes it easier. Alex is doing a great job. He has run very well. The whole NAPA team is doing a great job.”"

Pieter Rossi, Alexander’s father and agent, added the following, according to NBC Sports.

"“We expect to make significant progress before we get to Mid-Ohio.”"

The race weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday afternoon’s race, the Honda Indy 200.

More from IndyCar

Alexander Rossi has previously not stated much about his situation for beyond the conclusion of the 2019 season aside of the fact that it is “in God’s hands” and we should know his decision by the end of the season.

Rossi is currently in second place in the championship standings, as he trails Newgarden by 29 points (487 to 458). He is coming off of a season that resulted in him finishing in a career-high second in the standings with a career-high three victories. After finishing in 11th in the 2016 season, he has improved every season, as he finished in seventh in the 2017 season.

Rossi has earned seven victories over the course of his career, including two so far this season, and when he wins races, he dominates them. He has earned both of his victories so far this season by more than 20 seconds, and his average margin of victory in his six non-Indianapolis 500 victories is more than 11 seconds.
