IndyCar: 2022 Indy 500 qualifying – Starting lineup, updates
By Asher Fair
Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for next Sunday afternoon’s running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Qualifying for the biggest race of the 2022 IndyCar season is scheduled to begin this morning (moved up by an hour from 12:00 p.m. ET to 11:00 a.m. ET) at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The 33 drivers on the entry list for the 106th running of the Indy 500 are each set to make a four-lap qualifying attempt around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval in Speedway, Indiana.
Additional qualifying attempts are allowed afterward, with a priority lane (must give up previous speed) and a regular lane opening up.
In a significant change from recent years, the top 12 drivers, not just the top nine, from today’s qualifying session advance to the next session tomorrow afternoon.
Instead of just one Fast Nine Shootout, there are two Sunday sessions to determine the pole position. The first session features these 12 drivers (Top 12 Qualifying), and the top six drivers from this session advance to the Firestone Fast Six, which is the new battle for the pole position.
The drivers who finish outside of the top 12 in today’s session are locked into their starting positions for next Sunday’s race, as there aren’t more than 33 drivers on the entry list.
If there had been more than 33 drivers, only the drivers who had finished from 13th to 30th place in today’s session would be locked into their starting positions, and the drivers outside of the top 30 would participate in the Last Row Shootout on Sunday.
Follow along with Saturday’s portion of qualifying for the 106th running of the Indy 500.
